No matter what the result will be of the game ITALY-ROMANIA (I predict a 1-2 win for Romania on this friday the 13) , it's already clear that 2008 will go down in Romania's music history as 'a year to remember'. It would be great if it would also become a historical football year for Romania!
Earlier this year , Romanians made KYLIE's Bucharest show the most succesful one (in terms of audience) of the whole European tour , on Monday (more than a month before showdate!) the very last ticket for the METALLICA show on July 23 was sold (never happened before in Romania), it looks like the IRON MAIDEN show on August 4 will be sold out soon as well (so if you wanna go; hurry !) and - last but not least - the LENNY KRAVITZ show (July 26) will again see a great and enthusiastic crowd in Cotroceni.
And then there's of course B'ESTFEST ! Very happy to see that the majority of you appreciates this year's programming (less 'evident' , more daring and - I dare say - more interesting and exciting than last year). This is also a clear sign that the Romanian music market is growing up fast and the MUSIC (in stead of 'the hype/the image') is becoming more important . Having KAISER CHIEFS and MANIC STREET PREACHERS as double headliners on July 5 with NOUVELLE VAGUE as 'counter point' at the same time ,is indeed not 'the save bet' for Romania. But we feel very strongly that we have a duty to risk and to experiment, because only by doing so we can pay our own contribution to 'open up' this market and give our public a taste of things that they do not necessarily hear on mainstream radio every day.
Having said this, we do not want to part from the concept that B'Estfest should be a festival for everybody's taste and without 'musical racism'. We saw last year that Hip Hop, Emo and Old School Rock can live and enjoy perfectly 'side by side' when we programmed WU TANG CLAN, ALICE COOPER and MARYLIN MANSON right after each other and that is for me one of the beauties of this festival.
I could not imagine a world where I would close myself off from ' a genre ' and not be open to any 'good music' (no matter if it's rock, hip hop, reggea, world music , alternative or whatever..). In my Cd collection PINK FLOYD and (dare I say it ?) ABBA live as happy neighbours together with THE BEATLES, KAISER CHIEFS, MANU CHAO, BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, PINK , THE MARS VOLTA, DEUS , DEPECHE MODE , AC/DC, BOB MARLEY and... BEETHOVEN (to name but a few) and I enjoyed THE MOOod's performance at the B'Estfest press conference of this year , as I did enjoy the showmanship of Robbie Williams in Budapest last year.
So yes, I am looking forward to see and enjoy Alanis AND Kaiser Chiefs AND Nelly AND Stereophonics AND Unkle AND Judas Priest on July 11, AND, AND, AND,.....
I hope you do too and if you don't than there's lots of other things to do on B'estfest while 'the act that you can't stand' is performing on one of the stages. One way or another, I'm pretty sure you'll have a great time at B'Estfest and you can rest assured that our team will do it's utmost to make it the best possible experience for you.

in my opinion, the whole "concept" of the 3 stages, the counter-point, as you name it, is against the idea of no "music-racism". i like both unkle and cypress hill, and i was thrilled when i heard that nouvelle vague and kaiser chiefs will play at bestfest. well now i'm a bit disappointed because i will have to choose only 2 of these 4 great acts. i hope that maybe next year you'll somehow repair these issues. and, yes...HAI ROMANIA! |

That's what you think! I was there in the last day of B'estival last year and most of the public that was in front of the stage for Alice Cooper was formed of fancy girls and "cool guys" that didn't have any knowledge about rock music. Mixing rock and hip-hop was a very bad idea! |

See your point, but that's the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.
And more freedom of choice (which we provide at B'Estfest this year), does indeed come with a bit of 'stress of what to choose'. Happens to me every time I visit a restaurant , where they have 10 courses I'd like to eat, but I have to choose one. Frustrating. Still... I would be not too happy to go to a restaurant that only has 'one' of my favourite dishes on the menu.
I'd suggest (that's what I'm going to do) a bit of a Nouvelle Vague/Cypress Hill starter, some Kaiser Chiefs/Unkle for main course and a digestive chat with the friends at one of the bars (open 'till 2 a.m. this year!).

Hi Pancu,
you just confirmed my point. I like the idea that 'fancy girls' and 'cool guys' - who otherwise would NEVER listen to Alice Cooper - DO listen (and apparently appreciate since they stay in front of the stage)to Alice Cooper at B'Estfest.
Or do you suggest that only 'certain kind of people, dressed in a certain way and knowledgable about 'their' music' have a right to enjoy Alice Cooper ? Cause THAT would be pure 'music-racism'.

I must say: this is a very interesting playlist. Some new groups for me to discover, finally being able to see the Manics, trying to jump higher as the singer of the Kaiser Chiefs, finally hearing some balkanbeats for real, etc etc
Last year was super, but I am sure that this year will be even better! And hopefully a bit more cloudy...
So I can't wait to jump in the plane to be there again! So see you soon ,Guido :-)
And Romanian can be proud on Bestfest, being a well-organised festival from the first year with an impressive line-up :-) |

yes guido, although in a restaurant you can go over and over again until you eat all the 10 courses, for an other concert we may have to wait a few years, sometimes we only have one performance from one band.so you see my point, i'm a little dissapointed beacause i like too see a full concert, thats the beauty. |

ok, I just saw the program and I am REALLY disappointed...
UNKLE and Cypress were some of the main reasons I bought tickets for Bestfest, and now I have to see only one of them? (or parts of both, of course, but still....)
wasn't it possible for UNKLE to perform just a liittle later :(
I wanted to see The Last Supper too, I discovered them thanks to the festival, but between them and Stereophonics....
I know you can't have it all but come on! Cypress and UNKLE at the same time is tooo bad :(
anyway, I'm looking forward to arriving there for the first time and I hope it will be as good as I expect (or better) :) |

Sorry Elena. As every year, we take everybody's concerns and remarks into consideration and will always do our best to accomodate as many as possible. However, I'm afraid it will be impossible to satisfy everybody all the time (but we keep trying ;-)).
At what date, what time, what stage , before or after what other artist a band plays is not only up to us. The band and their management have the final say in this and it is 'subject to negotiations'. As you, we can also not always 'have it as we want' , but I guess that goes more many things in life.
Hope we can meet your expectations!
Cheers,
Guido |
